We believe every school can continue to improve, regardless of its starting point. Our role as a Trust is to understand each school well, celebrate what is working, identify where further development is needed and provide the expertise, capacity and support to help leaders move forward.
Our approach is not based on imposing a single model on every school. Each school has its own community, context, strengths and priorities. We work alongside leaders to develop improvement strategies that respond to those individual needs while maintaining consistently high expectations for every child across MAST.
Above all, school improvement is something we do with schools, not to schools.
School improvement across MAST is led by our Director of Education, supported by our Teaching & Learning Lead.
Together, they work closely with Headteachers, senior leaders and staff across the Trust, providing strategic leadership, professional challenge and practical support.
The Director of Education provides oversight of educational standards and school improvement across MAST. Working alongside Headteachers, the Director helps schools evaluate their effectiveness, identify priorities, strengthen leadership and ensure that improvement activity remains focused on the areas that will make the greatest difference for pupils.
The Teaching & Learning Lead works directly with leaders and classroom practitioners to strengthen teaching, curriculum and professional practice. This includes coaching, modelling, professional development, curriculum support and working alongside teachers and subject leaders to translate improvement priorities into strong classroom practice.
This combination of strategic oversight and hands-on professional support means that schools can access help at both leadership and classroom level.
We pride ourselves on providing support and challenge with integrity and compassion.
Strong Trust relationships allow us to have open and constructive conversations about what is working well and where things need to improve. Our approach is rigorous, but never punitive.
The education team works with Headteachers and school leaders to develop a clear understanding of each school’s strengths, challenges and next steps.
Support can include:
The level and nature of support is responsive to the needs of each school and can change over time.
Effective school improvement begins with knowing schools well.
Through regular visits, conversations with leaders, reviews, monitoring and analysis, our education team builds a detailed understanding of the quality of education within each school.
We use this knowledge to identify strengths, emerging risks and opportunities for further development.
Quality assurance is therefore not simply about checking compliance. It is about creating an accurate shared understanding of a school so that support can be timely, proportionate and genuinely useful.
Where something needs to improve, we aim to identify it early and work alongside the school to address it.
There will be points when a school, team or individual leader requires additional capacity.
MAST is able to respond flexibly at these moments.
Schools may receive enhanced support from the central education team, leaders from other MAST schools or colleagues with particular areas of expertise.
This might include intensive leadership support, additional monitoring, curriculum development, coaching, modelling, team teaching or temporary capacity to help a school address a specific priority.
Our principle is simple: when one school needs more, we work collectively to provide more.
Being part of a Trust means that no school has to face a significant challenge alone.
Some of the greatest expertise within MAST sits within our schools.
We therefore actively create opportunities for staff to work across school boundaries, learn from colleagues and contribute to improvement beyond their own setting.
School-to-school support might involve Headteachers working alongside one another, subject leaders sharing expertise, teachers observing practice in another school or colleagues joining Trust-wide reviews.
Staff are encouraged to participate in school reviews and improvement work across MAST. This provides valuable support to the school being reviewed while also creating powerful professional development for those taking part.
It builds a culture in which colleagues can ask difficult questions, share effective practice and learn together.
Developing our people is one of the most important ways in which we improve our schools.
MAST provides a comprehensive professional development programme for colleagues at different stages of their careers and across a range of roles.
Professional learning is shaped by the priorities of our schools, evidence about effective practice and developments within education.
Our programme includes opportunities for:
Trust-wide networks also enable colleagues working in similar roles or curriculum areas to meet regularly, share practice and solve problems together.
We want professional development to lead to changes in practice, not simply attendance at training. Our education team therefore works with schools to ensure that learning is followed through, applied and evaluated.
Strong schools depend upon strong leadership.
We support leaders at every stage, from those taking their first steps into leadership through to experienced Headteachers.
Coaching, professional networks, cross-Trust projects and opportunities to contribute beyond an individual school help colleagues to develop their expertise and broaden their experience.
Where we identify strong practice, we want that expertise to benefit others.
This creates opportunities for talented colleagues while also increasing the collective capacity of the Trust.
We do not see school improvement as the responsibility of the central team alone.
It is a collective endeavour.
Every school contributes something to MAST, and every school should benefit from the expertise that exists across the Trust.
Our most successful practice should not remain within a single classroom or school. We actively seek to identify it, share it and develop it so that more pupils can benefit.
Equally, when a school encounters difficulties, colleagues across MAST have a shared responsibility to help.
This balance of autonomy, collaboration, support and accountability is fundamental to our approach.
Ultimately, school improvement is about what children experience every day.
Our aim is to ensure that every MAST school provides an ambitious, inclusive and high-quality education, supported by strong leadership and excellent teaching.
Through the leadership of our Director of Education and Teaching & Learning Lead, close partnership with Headteachers and the collective expertise of colleagues across our schools, we are building a Trust in which improvement is continuous, expertise is shared and everyone takes responsibility for the success of every child.
Because when one school becomes stronger, MAST becomes stronger — and more children have the opportunity to Belong, Be Safe and Flourish.
