Finance & Business

Strong financial management is essential to the long-term success of every school.

At MAST, our central finance team provides schools with expert financial leadership, practical day-to-day support and robust systems, enabling school leaders to focus their time and resources on delivering the very best education for pupils.

We work closely with Headteachers and school leaders to ensure that financial decisions are informed, sustainable and aligned with each school’s priorities. Our approach combines strong Trust-wide oversight with an understanding of the individual context and needs of each school.

Strategic financial planning

Our finance team supports schools with annual budget setting, medium and longer-term financial planning, forecasting and scenario modelling. We work alongside leaders to understand the financial implications of staffing, curriculum, school improvement priorities and future development plans.

Regular monitoring and management reporting ensures that leaders have a clear and accurate understanding of their financial position throughout the year, allowing decisions to be made early and resources to be directed where they will have the greatest impact.

Day-to-day financial support

Schools benefit from a comprehensive central finance service, including support with:

  • budget setting, forecasting and monitoring;

  • management accounts and financial reporting;

  • purchasing and payment processes;

  • income and expenditure;

  • payroll and pensions;

  • VAT and statutory returns;

  • audit preparation and financial assurance;

  • procurement and contract management; and

  • financial systems, policies and procedures.

Our central team works closely with colleagues within schools, providing advice, problem-solving and practical support whenever it is needed.

Compliance and assurance

MAST maintains strong financial controls and systems of internal assurance to ensure that public funds are managed responsibly, transparently and in accordance with the Academy Trust Handbook and other statutory requirements.

The central team coordinates financial reporting, internal scrutiny and external audit across the Trust and provides Trustees, governors and school leaders with the information they need to discharge their responsibilities effectively.

This gives schools the reassurance of robust financial governance without requiring each school to replicate specialist expertise independently.

Procurement and value for money

Being part of MAST also creates opportunities to achieve better value through collective purchasing, Trust-wide contracts and shared services.

Our central team supports schools with procurement, contract negotiation and supplier management, helping to ensure that purchasing decisions are compliant, effective and represent good value for money.

Where it makes sense to work collectively, we use the combined scale of the Trust to secure efficiencies. Those efficiencies ultimately allow more of our resources to remain focused on teaching, learning and supporting children.

Supporting schools to focus on education

Our aim is not simply to manage finance centrally. It is to provide schools with the expertise, capacity and confidence they need to make strong decisions.

By combining high-quality financial leadership with responsive operational support, we reduce unnecessary administrative burden on school leaders, strengthen financial sustainability and ensure that resources are used strategically to support our shared ambition for every child to Belong, Be Safe and Flourish.
