Our model is designed to give schools the benefits of belonging to a larger organisation while preserving the distinctive character, context and community of each individual school.
We believe that schools are strongest when leaders are able to focus on education, staff are well supported and specialist functions are delivered consistently and effectively.
The role of the Central Team is therefore both to support and to challenge: providing expertise and additional capacity where it is needed, while maintaining high expectations across all aspects of Trust and school performance.
Our Central Team brings together expertise across:
Colleagues within the Central Team work closely with Headteachers, school leaders and staff, providing both strategic leadership and responsive day-to-day support.
This means that schools can access specialist knowledge without needing to recreate every function independently.
We recognise that every school is different.
Schools vary in size, context, community, strengths and priorities, and the support they require will therefore vary too.
Our approach is not based on a fixed package applied identically to every school. Instead, we work with leaders to understand what each school needs and provide support that is proportionate and responsive.
At different points, this may involve strategic advice, professional development, additional leadership capacity, operational support, specialist expertise or more intensive school improvement work.
Where a school needs more support, the Trust has the capacity to respond.
Strong Trust relationships depend upon openness, professional trust and high expectations.
We aim to provide support and challenge with integrity and compassion, creating relationships in which leaders can celebrate success, discuss difficulties openly and seek help early.
The Central Team works alongside schools to understand performance, identify emerging risks and support improvement before issues become more significant.
Challenge is an important part of this relationship, but our approach is developmental rather than punitive.
We want leaders to feel both accountable and supported.
Our philosophy is rooted in building capacity within our schools.
We do not want improvement to depend permanently upon external intervention or individual people. Instead, we invest in developing leaders, teachers and professional staff so that improvements are sustainable over time.
Professional development, coaching, Trust-wide networks and opportunities to work across schools all contribute to this approach.
We also recognise that education professionals have limited time to engage with the volume of research, guidance and new thinking available to the sector.
Our central teams therefore help schools interpret evidence and developments in education and translate these into practical, useful professional learning.
One of the greatest strengths of a Trust is the expertise already present within its schools.
We actively encourage colleagues to learn from one another, contribute beyond their own setting and share effective practice across MAST.
This might include:
We believe that expertise should not remain isolated within one school.
Where something is working exceptionally well, we want other schools to benefit from it too.
Developing our people is central to how we improve our schools.
MAST provides a broad programme of professional development for colleagues at different stages of their careers and across different roles.
Our programme includes development for school leaders, middle leaders, subject leaders, teachers, Early Career Teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs and operational colleagues.
Alongside formal training, our Trust-wide networks provide regular opportunities for colleagues to collaborate, share practice and learn together.
Our professional development programme is reviewed regularly to ensure that it responds to the priorities of our schools, feedback from staff and the strongest available evidence.
Centralising specialist services also allows schools to benefit from greater consistency, efficiency and value for money.
Functions such as finance, HR, estates, governance and compliance can be coordinated across the Trust, reducing duplication and ensuring that schools have access to appropriate professional expertise.
Working collectively also creates opportunities for better procurement, shared systems and more strategic use of resources.
Most importantly, it reduces the operational burden placed upon individual school leaders and allows more of their time and energy to remain focused on children, staff and educational leadership.
The Central Team also provides an important layer of assurance across MAST.
Through robust systems, professional oversight and Trust-wide monitoring, we help ensure that schools remain compliant, financially sustainable, well governed and safe.
This gives Headteachers access to support when complex issues arise while also giving Trustees confidence that key responsibilities are being managed effectively across the Trust.
MAST includes both Church of England and community schools, each with its own history, identity and community.
We value that distinctiveness.
Our aim is not to make every school the same, but to create a strong shared infrastructure around them: providing expertise, capacity and opportunities for collaboration while enabling local leaders to lead their schools well.
Schools contribute to the Trust as well as receiving from it.
We believe that this sense of collective responsibility is one of the greatest strengths of MAST.
Everything we provide through the Central Team ultimately has one purpose: to strengthen our schools and improve the experience and outcomes of children.
By combining specialist expertise, professional challenge, practical support, shared services and the collective capacity of our schools, we create an environment in which leaders and staff can focus on what matters most.
Our ambition is that every school within MAST has the capacity and support it needs to succeed — and that every child has the opportunity to Belong, Be Safe and Flourish.
